MINNEAPOLIS — The Timberwolves officially made Ryan Saunders, 33, the youngest head coach in the NBA Tuesday morning.
At a press conference inside Target Center, Saunders was introduced by new President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas.
According to Rosas, the team interviewed multiple candidates for the position, but ultimately thought Saunders was the best fit thanks to his ability to relate to the players and also his forward-thinking approach to the game.
Saunders is the son of former Timberwolves head coach and executive Flip Saunders, who died in 2015. Many of Ryan's family, friends and players were in attendance Tuesday morning. Ryan became emotional when talking about his father and also the strength and support of his family.
Last year, Saunders took over as interim coach after Tom Thibodeau was fired, and Rosas liked what he saw during Ryan's brief time in charge.
