LAKE CITY, Minn. — Editor's note: The fishing story above first aired on Aug. 30, 2023.
Lakes and rivers across Minnesota haven't even frozen solid yet, but anglers are already looking ahead to spring and the 2024 Governor's Fishing Opener.
The two-day celebration of all things fishing will take place May 10 and 11 in Lake City, located on the shores of Lake Pepin. Governor Walz will be among the anglers chasing fish from 85 different species - walleye, sauger, pike, perch, and white bass among them - that populate the naturally occurring lake off the Mississippi River.
“We will celebrate Minnesota's rich angling heritage and how fishing tourism shapes our state's modern identity," said Explore Minnesota director Lauren Bennett McGinty. "We are confident that this event will not only provide a memorable experience but will inspire many to explore the diverse attractions our state has to offer and support local businesses in communities across Minnesota in all four seasons. Together with the Lake City community, we hope to share Minnesota's unparalleled hospitality and boundless opportunities for adventure."
The Governor’s Fishing Opener was established in 1948 to promote Minnesota’s recreation industry, and serve as a kick-off celebration for the summer tourism season. The location is moved around the state each year to celebrate Minnesota's diverse geography and spread the economic benefits that come from anglers spending money on food, lodging and entertainment.
More details about the event will be released in the coming months.
