CHASKA, Minn. — Swimmers diving in at three popular Carver County beaches will now do so at their own risk following a decision by the parks and rec board.

Although swimming season is still months away, the county announced Tuesday that there will be no lifeguard services at Lake Minnewashta, Lake Waconia and Baylor Regional Parks. The decision was made after examining the results of an online survey by Carver County residents.

Instead of being staffed, swimming will be posted as "at your own risk" starting on Memorial Day. Beaches will be open between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

In the past Carver County contracted with an outside provider of lifeguard services, but last spring the parks and rec board was notified that the contractor would be unable to fully staff the beaches at Lake Minnewashta and Lake Waconia.

The survey presented to residents asked about leaving beaches unstaffed, or having the county recruit, train and pay the salaries of its lifeguards.
