CARVER COUNTY, Minn. — Zebra mussels have been confirmed in a Lotus Lake water sample, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The sample was taken as part of an early detection program by the Riley Purgatory Watershed District and Carver County.
Five microscopic zebra mussel larvae were found in the sample, and subsequently five adult zebra mussels were found on a dock in another part of Lotus Lake during a follow-up search by specialists, the DNR said.
Lotus Lake is going to be added to the infested water list so that people can take precautions.
The DNR encourages lake property owners to carefully check boats, trailers, docks and lifts and all water-related equipment for invasive species.
The DNR highlights the importance of keeping docks and boat lifts out of the water for a minimum of 21 days before putting them into another body of water.
According to the DNR, Minnesota law requires boaters and anglers to:
- Clean watercraft and trailers of aquatic plants and prohibited invasive species
- Drain all water by removing drain plugs and keeping them out during transport
- Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash
