ST PAUL, Minn. — Back in May, Minnesota United midfielder Robin Lod tipped in a pass from Joseph Rosales to become the club's all-time leading goal scorer. The record-setting score, which came in a 2-1 win over the Portland Timbers, wouldn't have come had it not been for the perfect feed from Rosales.
The most memorable assist of Lod's career, however, may not have come until weeks later. And it wasn't even delivered by anyone on the current roster.
During a recent training session, Lod's daughter, Louisa, presented her father with a kit that had "All-Star" written on the back, marking the first time in his career he'd been named to the MLS All-Star game.
"Everyone has recognized the contribution that Rob's made to us as a squad so far," said United coach Eric Ramsay in a video posted on the club's website. "And I'm sure everyone will say the same as me — we couldn't be more excited to watch you play on that team."
Lod is the first United player selected to play in the All-Star game since goalkeeper Dayne St. Claire and midfielder Emanuel Reynoso were picked to play in the 2022 All-Star Game at Allianz Field. Lod has played in 121 games with the United, recording 29 goals and 26 assists.
"I think there was one coach who used to say that when the team is playing better, the individuals are playing better," said Lod in the video. "So a big thank you for you guys, all the players and the coaches and everybody. A big thank you for the family, they've been through everything for my career, so it's nice to share that moment with them."
The 2024 All-Star Game, which features the top players from the MLS facing off against LIGA MX All-Stars, will be played Wednesday, July 24 in Columbus, Ohio.
