The Minnesota Vikings ensured that they will keep another young star in the fold for the long term.
The team and fourth-year wide receiver Stefon Diggs have agreed to terms on a five-year extension that will run through 2023, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed. Diggs is expected to sign the contract today. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Vikings had yet to announce the move.
Contract figures were not immediately available, but the agreement sets up Diggs, 24, to rank among the highest paid players at his position.
A fifth-round pick out of Maryland in 2015, Diggs is coming off of a season in which he recorded 64 catches for 849 yards and eight touchdowns and produced a number of big plays while helping the Vikings reach the NFC Championship game.
Diggs, who was set to become a free agent next offseason, is the latest example of the Vikings ensuring members of their core group do not hit the open market. This offseason, they handed out extensions to defensive end Danielle Hunter and linebacker Eric Kendricks.
The Vikings believe they have the roster to compete for a Super Bowl. They added quarterback Kirk Cousins to a three-year, $84 million fully guaranteed contract in the offseason, and have talented running back Dalvin Cook returning from an ACL tear that sidelined him for much of his rookie season.
