ROSEVILLE, Minn — Hockey Without Limits is an event founded by Matt Dumba to promote diversity and inclusion in the sport of hockey.
Since Dumba parted ways with Minnesota, the Wild have taken over the event, in particular, forwards, Connor Dewar and Brandon Duhaime.
"We just put this event on every year to celebrate diversity and inclusion in the game," said Gabby Billing, the Wild's hockey partnerships coordinator. "And to spread that awareness and celebrate it."
The diversity and inclusion stretches from players who are blind and deaf to those of different races and ethnicities.
"It's a great event for players from underrepresented populations within hockey to come out here and be able to be together," said Meredith Lang, the executive director of Mosaic Hockey Collective. "And be seen and just have a wonderful time getting to know about other organizations too that are in the metro area and skate and have fun."
To keep the skating and the fun going, Dumba passed the torch.
"He was pretty subtle," said Dewar. "He kind of just thrust it upon me. I was kind of a younger guy, but I was here last year and it was a lot of fun and it felt special to be a part of."
"He didn't say much," said Duhaime. "He kind of just asked us and we jumped at the opportunity. Anytime you can get out here and give back to the community, it's awesome."
Both players say they hope this event is a way for kids from all over to come out and bond over the game.
"Hopefully we can crack a few jokes," said Duhaime. "Maybe a few smiles and just have a good time out there."
