Northern Minnesota wildfire 100% contained on Sunday

On Saturday night officials said crews had completed their work on the Fry Fire, reducing it to 186 acres in the Superior National Forest.

TOFTE, Minn. — After days of hard work, crews have contained a smoldering wildfire in the Superior National Forest.

On Saturday, officials reported fire activity was minimal, with "occasional creeping and smoldering" spotted on some parts of the Fry Fire.

Sunday morning was the final report on the Fry Fire from officials and they said the fire was 100% contained as of Saturday evening.

Fire containment is about more than just beating back the flames, officials said in information released to the media, it involves removing other fuel in the area and extinguishing other sources of heat.

Highway 1 was closed earlier in the week due to the fire but has since reopened for public use. It will remain so for the foreseeable future.

The Fry Fire sparked on the morning of May 15 as part of a prescribed burn. Just after noon on that day, a spot fire was seen within the prescribed fire project area but outside the planned burn unit and in an area of denser fuels. That spot fire was declared a wildfire at 1 p.m. on the 15th.

Last summer multiple fires burned across northern Minnesota. Leanne Langeberg, a public information officer with the Interagency Fire Center, told KARE 11 in June 2023 that nine out of 10 wildfires in Minnesota are human-caused.
