NASA's Cassini spacecraft getting ready for grand finale mission

NASA's Cassini spacecraft, launched in 1997 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, was a robotic spacecraft designed to study the outer solar system, specifically Saturn, and it's largest moon Titan.

MINNEAPOLIS -- NASA's Cassini spacecraft, launched in 1997 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, was a robotic spacecraft designed to study the outer solar system, specifically Saturn and it's largest moon Titan.

During the mission, Cassini was able to photograph large lakes of liquid methane on the Moon Titan and also learn about the iconic rings that surround Saturn.

For it's grand finale, Cassini will be taking an orbit that takes it inside the rings for the first time.

"Not only do we have instruments that can photograph and sample, we also have instruments that can send a very precise radio signal to Earth. Passing that signal through the rings and atmosphere can tell us a tremendous amount about their internal structure," said Eric Maize, Cassini Mission, JPL.

The Cassini spacecraft will then plunge into Saturn's intense atmosphere and be vaporized at the end of its mission in September 2017.
