MINNEAPOLIS — A man is dead after an early morning crash involving three vehicles in northeast Minneapolis Monday.

Police spokesman John Elder says squads were dispatched around 5:15 a.m. to the intersection of Lowry Avenue NE and Marshall Street NE after a passerby reported an accident with at least one vehicle on fire.

Officers arrived to find an SUV engulfed in flames and two other vehicles that had been damaged. Early indications are that a sedan was westbound on Lowry and the SUV was headed south on Marshall. Elder says one of the drivers ran through a red light and struck the other vehicle. One of them then careened into a nearby minivan.

At this point, Elder says investigators don't know which driver ran the red light.

Police say this vehicle and an SUV collided after one of the two drivers ran a red light at the intersection of Lowry Ave. and Marshall Street NE.

The driver of the SUV, described only as an adult male, was declared dead on scene while three other people were transported to a nearby hospital with broken bones. Those injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The Minnesota State Patrol is helping Minneapolis Police reconstruct the crash to determine what happened and who is responsible.
