KANDIYOHI COUNTY, Minn. — A teen from southwestern Minnesota has died and his two brothers remain hospitalized after a UTV they were riding in collided with a pickup Sunday in Kandiyohi County.
The Minnesota State Patrol website says the incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. at an intersection in Norway Lake Township. Investigators believe a Chevy Silverado driven by a 40-year-old man from Sunburg was eastbound on Highway 9 when it collided with a Polaris Ranger carrying 15-year-old William Dahl, 11-year-old Harrison Dahl and 10-year-old Drew Dahl.
The two youngest brothers were wearing lap belts, while Will Dahl was not. None of the boys were wearing helmets.
On a CaringBridge site dedicated to the boys, parents Mike and Lara Dahl said that Will died early Tuesday morning.
On Monday, the family posted that a brain analysis on Will showed no activity and doctors said they could do nothing for him. The family has chosen to donate his organs to help other children and said on Caring Bridge that the doctors would be able to use a majority of them.
"Even though we are grieving our son, he is still being the Will that he is, by helping others live," the site read.
The CaringBridge post says Harrison is experiencing swelling of the brain but is reacting to his nurses. The family said that they are "in a waiting game" for the swelling to go down.
His parents say a CT scan on Drew showed a bruise and lacerations on his liver but doctors aren't concerned, and he is already undergoing occupational and physical therapy. A more recent CaringBridge post says Drew should be able to leave the hospital in a matter of days.
A GoFundMe set up for the boys and their parents has reached more than $117,000 as of Wednesday. Organizers say donations will be used to cover medical care and expenses.
Mike and Lara Dahl made sure to thank their families friends, and community for the outpouring of prayers and support.
"We are extremely broken, our family will never be the same," they wrote. "We need to be strong for these boys, they are losing the best brother and friend any could ask for, and our faith in Jesus is what is getting us through."
