CARLTON, Minn. — The Carlton County Sheriffs Office said a man was killed and another person injured when a truck left the road and struck a tree early Monday morning.

In a press release, officers say they received a report of a vehicle crash around 12:15 a.m. in the 200 block of Thompson Road in Carlton.

Police said the truck was heading south when it left the road and crashed into a tree. A man in the passenger seat, identified by the sheriff's office as 38-year-old Cuong Hang of Gretna, Louisiana, was thrown from the truck and died. The driver, a 39-year-old man who is also from Gretna, was critically injured and taken to Essentia Hospital in Duluth by ambulance. Investigators say at least one of the men was not wearing a seatbelt.

Alcohol appears to have played a factor in this crash, officers said.

Multiple departments assisted in this call, including Carlton County Sheriffs, Carlton Fire and Ambulance, Cloquet Area Fire District, Esko Fire Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Fond du Lac Police Department and the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.
