Work begins on I-94/I-35E project in St. Paul

Work will begin Monday at 7 p.m. with the closing of ramps from 12th Street to southbound I-35E.

ST PAUL, Minn. — The second, and hopefully final, year of a significant construction project involving two Twin Cities interstates is set to get underway on Monday in St. Paul.

Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesman Ken Barnard says weather permitting, ramp closures on I-94 will begin at 7 p.m. from 12th Street to southbound I-35E and westbound I-94. Work will then begin to reduce lanes on westbound I-94 between I-35E and Marion Street.

The first stage of this year’s construction will focus on repairs and resurfacing on I-94 between Marion St. and I-35E, along with work on I-35E between I-94 and University Avenue from mid-April through mid-summer.

The final stage of the project will be on I-94 between I-35E and Mounds Blvd. from mid-summer through the fall of 2022.

Barnard added that the project will eventually reduce capacity on both I-94 and I-35E to two lanes in each direction, and require long-term closures of ramps into and out of downtown St. Paul throughout the fall.

As Minnesotans know from experience, MnDOT's construction schedule is subject to change due to weather considerations. Most work is set to be completed by the fall of 2022.

The two-year project to repair and resurface I-94 between Western Ave. and Mounds Blvd. and I-35E between I-94 and University Ave. in St. Paul started during the summer of 2021. Additional work associated with the interstate project includes resurfacing ramps and frontage roads along I-94, storm sewer updates and bridge rehabilitation work, and repairing and upgrading sidewalks and approaches to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
