Crash sends SUV careening into pond in Afton

Three vehicles were involved in the crash, including the one that spun, then rolled backwards into the water. The driver escaped to dry land.

AFTON, Minn. — A driver was cited for her role in a three-vehicle crash that sent an SUV careening into a retention pond in Afton Friday.

Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Michael Lee says it happened just before noon at the intersection of Minnesota Highway 95 and Hudson Road. MnDOT cameras captured the driver of a white Ford Expedition starting to turn left when she entered the lane where another SUV was moving through the intersection. The white SUV clipped the blue vehicle, spinning it around, sending the truck and its driver rolling backward into the pond.

A tire came off one of the SUVs involved in the primary crash and made contact with a third vehicle.

Video of the incident shows multiple people running to the vehicle in the pond to help. Lt. Lee reports that the driver of that SUV made it to dry land, and says no one involved in the crash was injured.

A citation was issued to the 53-year-old driver from Afton who triggered the crash.
