I-394 near Minnetonka reopens after fatal crash

The heavily-used interstate was closed at Plymouth Road after a reported wrong-way driver crashed head-on into another vehicle early Friday morning.

MINNEAPOLIS — A fatal crash near Minnetonka closed 1-394 eastbound near Minnetonka for several hours Friday morning as the incident was reconstructed and the road cleared. As of 7 a.m. the interstate was open and traffic was flowing again.

The Minnesota State Patrol said the crash happened just before 4 a.m., and that the interstate would be closed between Plymouth Road and Ridgedale Drive near the Ridgedale Mall until further notice.

Investigators said a Jeep Wrangler was driving the wrong way on I-394, heading west in the eastbound lanes after getting on the interstate from 6th Street in Minneapolis. The Jeep eventually struck a Chrysler Sebring that was heading east head-on at Plymouth Road.

State troopers tell KARE 11 the 30-year-old driver of the Chrysler was the person killed in the crash, and the Sebring's passenger was taken to HCMC with non life-threatening injuries. The Jeep's driver was also taken to the hospital, and officials say that person is also expected to survive.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to police.

On Feb. 20, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner said the man was identified as 30-year-old Alan Alexander Caraveo of Melrose.
