WAYZATA, Minn. - There is a price to pay for progress.

While the construction of a concrete center median divider on a deadly stretch of Highway 12 is great and long-awaited news, the process of building it will trigger a commuter nightmare for approximately three weeks time.

MnDOT crews will be building the barrier on the stretch of Highway 12 from I-394 in Wayzata to Hennepin County Road 6 in Orono beginning on Monday, October 17. During the construction process Highway 12 will be completely closed in both directions, day and night. Traffic will be detoured onto County Road 112 through Long Lake and Orono.

The detour will cause severe traffic congestion, and MnDOT is urging drivers to find alternatives routes. Those using the detour should expect delays and plan on extra time when traveling through the area. Residents and business owners in Long Lake and Orono should expect heavier volumes of traffic in their area.

Highway 12 between Wayzata and Delano has become known as one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the metro, with deadly crossover crashes happening at an alarming rate. Law enforcement, residents and those who drive the road have been demanding safety improvements.
