Man killed in overnight Minneapolis crash

Minneapolis Police said early information indicates the male driver was traveling south on Nicollet Avenue when he crashed into a parked car.

MINNEAPOLIS — A busy Minneapolis intersection is open again after a significant traffic incident overnight Tuesday.

It happened at Nicollet Avenue and E. 19th Street around 11 p.m., where the driver of an SUV lost control and rolled, and the vehicle ended up on its roof. The impact was powerful enough that the airbags deployed inside the SUV.

According to Minneapolis Police, the male driver had life-threatening injuries when first responders arrived at the scene. The man was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, but died on the way to the hospital, police confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

Debris littered the intersection, where investigators examined the vehicle while trying to determine what had occurred. Police said their early investigation indicates that the driver was traveling south on Nicollet Avenue when he crashed into a parked car.

The damaged vehicle was eventually rolled back on its tires and loaded onto a flatbed tow truck for removal.

MPD still considers the case to be an active death investigation and said homicide detectives are working to learn more about what happened.

KARE 11's CeCe Gaines was on the scene Tuesday morning and said that a building appeared to be damaged in the incident, as well as a nearby sidewalk.
