Motorcyclist dead after rear-ending vehicle in Chanhassen

The Minnesota State Patrol says the rider - a 33-year-old Bloomington man - hit the rear of a Nissan Rouge at Highway 5 and Great Plains Boulevard.

CHANHASSEN, Minn. — A motorcyclist is dead after colliding with an SUV Wednesday night in Chanhassen .

The Minnesota State Patrol website said the incident happened just before 8:30 p.m. on westbound Highway 5 at the intersection with Great Plains Blvd. Video from MnDOT's camera system shows the driver of a Nissan Rouge pulling away from a stoplight in the right lane when the rider, a 33-year-old Bloomington man, closes from behind the SUV at a high rate of speed and hits the slow-moving vehicle.

At that point the rider is thrown from his motorcycle. The State Patrol says he did not survive the impact. Two women from Aberdeen, SD were in the Nissan. At this time it is unclear if they were injured.

The westbound lanes of Highway 5 were closed for a period of time from Highway 101 to Market Boulevard while the crash was reconstructed and the scene cleared.

Law enforcement will release the identity of the victim later Thursday. The crash remains under investigation.
