A Minnesota State Trooper is uninjured, but his squad vehicle was not as lucky after it was struck on the shoulder of a busy interstate during Friday morning's rush hour.
State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Troy Christianson says the trooper was pulled over on the shoulder of I-35W at Highway 36, investigating a single-car crash around 7:45 a.m. when the incident occurred. The trooper was outside his vehicle when the driver of a Honda CRV rear-ended the squad, sending it careening into the unoccupied car involved in the original crash.
Christianson says the driver of the Honda suffered minor injuries in the crash, while the trooper was fortunate to come out uninjured.
At this point it is unclear if charges will be filed against the motorist who struck the patrol vehicle.
Minnesota does have the "Ted Foss Law" on the books, a measure that requires drivers to move over a lane when they encounter a law enforcement or emergency responder vehicle parked on the side of an interstate or highway. The is named after Foss, a Corporal with the State Patrol who was struck and killed in August of 2000 by a semi while responding to a call on the shoulder of I-90 in Rochester.
