WILLMAR, Minn. — A 2-year-old riding in her mother's lap was killed when their vehicle careened out of control on a loose gravel road and rolled near Roseland Township Thursday night.
A press release from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office said officers responded to the area of 225th Ave. SW, near the Renville County line and Colfax Township in Kandiyohi County just after 7 p.m.
Police say the driver, a 23-year-old woman from Clara City, was driving with a 2-year-old girl sitting in her lap. She reportedly lost control of the vehicle on loose gravel and it rolled into the ditch on the north side of 225th Ave.
The woman was wearing her seatbelt, and neither she nor the toddler were thrown from the vehicle. The driver was taken by ambulance to Carris Health Rice Emergency Room in Willmar with serious injuries.
The 2-year-old was airlifted from the accident scene, but died on the way to the hospital.
Neither of the victims' names have been released at this time.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
