Trailer with horses rolls, shuts down I-35E in St. Paul

State Patrol spokesman Lt. Gordon Shank confirms there were five horses inside, and said three of the animals did not survive.

ST PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota State Patrol says a trailer carrying five horses rolled overnight on I-35E at University Avenue in St. Paul, shutting down the busy interstate for hours.

It happened shortly before 2:45 a.m. While details about exactly what led to the mishap are few, State Patrol spokesman Lt. Gordon Shank confirms there were five horses inside, and says three of the animals did not survive.  

Troopers shut down I-35E at I-94, and also blocked the ramps to SB Highway 52 and Wacouta. All southbound traffic is being diverted to WB Interstate 94 until the accident is reconstructed and the wreckage cleared. 

The interstate was reopened to traffic around 10:15 a.m.
