Winter weather prompts I-29 closure from Fargo to Canada

Travelers are warned to be careful driving in portions of western Minnesota near the South Dakota border.

MINNEAPOLIS — Blowing snow and freezing temperatures have put the western parts of Minnesota on ice Saturday, with travel advisories spanning from Fargo, North Dakota, into Canada.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and North Dakota Highway Patrol closed Interstate 29 northbound and southbound from Fargo to the Canadian border at 11:30 a.m. This was due to blowing snow, icy road conditions, near-zero visibility and stranded vehicles.

Near zero visibility was reported.

In the western portion of Minnesota, state troopers said they had responded to several crashes, spinouts and jackknifed semis on Saturday morning.

There are currently no roads closed in Minnesota, but MNDOT reports that portions of Highway 200 near Ada and US-2 near East Grand Forks could be challenging for motorists, with blowing snow and ice on the roads.
