5 people were injured after a wrong-way crash overnight on Highway 169 in Brooklyn Park.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — The Minnesota State Patrol says a wrong-way crash on Highway 169 that left five people injured overnight may have been caused by alcohol.

Troopers say a 2017 Nissan Altima driven by a 28-year-old woman from Lester Prairie was headed southbound in the northbound lanes of 169 near County Road 81 (Brooklyn Boulevard) in Brooklyn Park around 1:15 a.m. when she collided head-on with another car.

Investigators say it appears the driver of the Altima was impaired by alcohol. She was taken to North Memorial with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, 22-year-old Ahmud Quadir Carrington from Minneapolis, suffered injuries that would eventually claim his life. There were three passengers in Carrington's vehicle, a 22-year-old woman from Rush City, a 23-year-old man from Minneapolis, and a 21-year-old woman from St. Paul. All suffered non-life threatening injuries and are being treated at North Memorial Hospital.

The wreckage from the crash closed northbound 169 for several hours as the crash was reconstructed and cleaned up.

More details are expected to be released later Wednesday.
