MINNESOTA, USA — It was an active weather weekend across northwest Minnesota as multiple storm cells produced hail and possible tornadoes.
In total, the National Weather Service received 15 reports of tornadoes across four counties on Saturday, June 24. While the NWS Grand Forks sent survey crews to the area, they have not yet confirmed any tornado touchdowns as of Monday afternoon
Of the 15 reports, three came out of Becker County, five were from Norman County, five were from Mahnomen County and two were from Polk County.
In comments about the tornado reports, the NWS said some weather spotters reported tree damage, and in Mahnomen County, a barn was reportedly damaged by the storms. According to KARE 11 meteorologist Ben Dery, tornadoes were captured on video from over the weekend. Crews will determine how strong those storms were during their investigation.
Farther souther, a funnel cloud was reported in Waseca County and a rotating wall cloud was reported in Blue Earth County.
Two more funnels were also spotted in Wisconsin.
In Minnesota, tornado season typically runs from March through November. However, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the most probable period of tornado danger is late spring and early summer, between 2-9 p.m.
If you find yourself in a tornado, avoid windows and go into a basement or under sturdy protection. Smaller interior rooms like bathrooms or closets can provide protection as well. Click here for more guidance on what to do in a tornado from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
