MINNEAPOLIS — Anyone who's been around anyone from Minnesota at any point in the last three decades knows about the Halloween blizzard of 1991 (and how many of us just won't stop talking about it).
But it turns out, the Halloween storm of 2024 already has the infamous 1991 storm beat on at least one key measurement: 2024 is a wetter storm than '91.
In fact, this is now the wettest Halloween on record.
KARE 11 meteorologist Ben Dery notes that the 1991 Halloween blizzard recorded 8.2" of snow at MSP airport. That amounted to about 0.85" of liquid precipitation.
As of 2 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2024, however, Dery said MSP had recorded 1.18" of total precipitation for Halloween 2024, with the combination of rain and snow that fell throughout the morning and early afternoon, beating the 1991 record.
So there you have it: add another chapter to Minnesota Halloween weather lore.
