Drought conditions improve across Minnesota

Severe drought now across parts of Minnesota
Drought monitor for Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS - Finally after some late spring rains, the drought situation across most of Minnesota has improved drastically. We started spring with MOST of Minnesota already under drought conditions due to a dry late summer, autumn, and winter. In fact, last week about half of Minnesota was considered to be under moderate drought. This week's updated drought monitor has cut that in half to about one quarter of the state (which does include a good portion of the east and southeast metro as well as northern Minnesota).

We've received about 1.25" of rainfall in the Twin Cities officially within just the last week (many spots saw more) and that put a big dent in the abnormally dry conditions. But, while it seems like it's been wet lately, it really isn't compared to normal May-June conditions (some of our wettest months). May rainfall right now is running just about average and nearly 90% of Minnesota still remains abnormally dry.
