INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. — Moisture levels continue to drop across already tinder-dry Minnesota, impacting everyone from farmers and gardeners to homeowners concerned about their withering lawns.
The latest update from the U.S. Drought Monitor says nearly 72% of the state is now under at least severe drought conditions; of that, 18% is suffering with extreme drought.
Just two weeks ago, the numbers were 50% severe and just under 4% dealing with extreme drought. The spiral reflects Minnesota's lack of rain and unusually warm temperatures. Forecasts say every day in the coming week will likely see temps of 90 degrees or above.
Members of the state drought task force are convening for the first time in nearly a decade to discuss options for helping those most impacted by the dry conditions. KARE 11 has talked with farmers who are considering selling off animals as crops they've planted for feed are being destroyed by heat and lack of rain.
Communities are also reacting to the worsening conditions, implementing watering bans or restrictions.
