Recent drought report shows statewide improvements

Most of the metro is between abnormally dry and moderate drought conditions with some parts of Washington County experiencing no drought conditions.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — A month after most of the state was experiencing severe drought conditions or worse, officials are starting to see improvements.

The latest report from the National Drought Mitigation Center shows about one-quarter of the state remains in severe drought conditions, with about 1% experiencing extreme drought conditions. The worst of the conditions remains in southern Minnesota — Mower County, Fillmore County and Freeborn County.

According to the report, most of the metro is between abnormally dry and moderate drought conditions with some parts of Washington County experiencing no drought conditions.

Back in September, 64% of the state was in a severe drought, with 26% experiencing extreme drought conditions. Nearly 3% of the state was under "exceptional" drought conditions — only the second time since the drought monitor program began in 1999 "exceptional" drought conditions were reported in Minnesota. The other time was August 2021.
