You might think you only see sun dogs when it's super cold, early in the morning and in the winter.
But the truth is, you can see them anytime of the year. At least, if the sun and ice crystals line up correctly!
Viewers this week saw midday sun dogs, but it was above freezing, what gives?
Well, we had high clouds which are 30,000-40,000 feet high where the temp is well below freezing.
When sunlight passes through hexagonal ice crystal plates sideways- at the right angle we see halos and 'sun dogs.'
Of course, a similar scenario happens on very cold mornings when humidity is high and we have ice crystals in the lower atmosphere.
