GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — It is well-established that predicting the weather in Minnesota can be a challenge. A slight change in a storm track can boost snow totals for an area previously expecting flurries, while a location preparing for snowmageddon can end up with nothing.
That being said, predictions for the snow event that swept into Minnesota Sunday turned out to be pretty dead-on. KARE 11's weather team forecast totals for the metro ranging from 4 to 11 inches, and reports from around the Twin Cities back that up.
As of Monday morning, Menomonee, Wis... just east of the metro, appears to be the snow champ with 10.3 inches, followed by Hugo with 9.1, MSP Airport with 8.2 inches (a new record) and Chanhassen with 8.1 inches. Here are some of the other totals reported to the National Weather Service.
- Waite Park - 8.6 inches
- Zimmerman - 8.3 inches
- St. Augusta - 8.2 inches
- Bloomington - 7.5 inches
- Corcoran - 7.5 inches
- Blaine - 7 inches
- Victoria - 6.6 inches
- Eagan - 6 inches
- Rosemount - 6 inches
- Brooklyn Park - 5.6 inches
In southern Minnesota, totals were generally a bit less, mostly ranging from 2 to 3 inches with a few exceptions. One report in Rochester measured 6.5 inches, while the town of Elba just east reported 7.2 inches.
KARE 11's John Zeigler says parts of Minnesota - namely the Brainerd Lakes area and other communities that sit north of the rain-snow line that runs from St. Cloud to Forest Lake - could get several more inches of snow Monday. Those south of the line, including most of the Twin Cities, will get rain and perhaps even thunderstorms that will erase much of the snow that fell Sunday.
