Leaf tornado hits KARE meteorologist Ben Dery during newscast

Ben was delivering his forecast during Thursday's 4 p.m. broadcast when strong winds whipped a mountain of leaves off the roof and into the KARE backyard.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — The idea behind the KARE 11 Backyard, when it launched decades ago, was having a meteorologist out in the middle of the elements they were talking about. If it was snowing, the flakes would be flying. If it was raining, well... you get the drift.

On Thursday's KARE 11 News at4, Ben Dery was delivering his forecast on a balmy but extremely blustery November day when a memorable moment unfolded. A large pile of leaves had gathered on top of a small roof that sits over the green screen Ben and KARE's other meteorologists stand in front of, and a huge wind gust sent them swirling.

"Hear that wind out there right now? You can see all the leaves crushing around... that's pretty remarkable, I feel like I'm in a snow globe but instead of snow, it's leaves," he laughed.

"We thought it was fake at first but realized it was actually happening!" posted KARE viewer Lynn Ann Zirkle after seeing the clip on Facebook.

"Watched it live, hilarious!" added Cindy Larson.

Ben forged on with his forecast, occasionally obscured by another wind-induced blast of leaves.
