GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Thursday temperatures are bitterly cold, causing school closures across Minnesota, but the Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools will be open.

Temperatures with wind chill are forecast to be -25 Thursday morning.

According to the Minneapolis school district website, classes will be cancelled if the wind chill forecast for 6:30 a.m. the following day is -35 or colder, with winds speeds of at least five to 10 miles an hour. The website reports a windchill forecast of -29 for Thursday morning, not cold enough to close.

The school district is encouraging parents to bundle students to stay warm and out of the wind, and advises downloading the 'Here Comes the Bus' app to track buses and limit time spent waiting outside.

The St. Paul Public School website includes a section with recommendations for dressing for freezing winter temps, including thick socks, boots and dressing in layers.

If Minneapolis school families do decide to keep kids home today, the district posted on Twitter that school standard attendance procedures should be followed.

St. Paul Public Schools tweeted Wednesday afternoon that even though the National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory through Thursday morning, there are no plans to close school.

Anoka-Hennepin, the biggest school district in the state, has closed all schools on Thursday. According to the district website, schools will reopen for after-school and evening activities, but students should check with their coaches and advisers before going back.
