Icy roads, falling snow slows commutes on Thursday

On Thursday a fresh coating of ice and snow slowed traffic and brought power outages to thousands.

MINNEAPOLIS — Wednesday offered a nice break from the winter weather, but Thursday put Twin Cities residents back on their winter grind with almost four inches of snow in some spots across the metro. 

Hundreds of MnDOT plows were out on the roads Thursday, but motorists were still slipping and sliding across the metro. 

Around 4:30 a.m., officers responded to a jack-knifed semi slowing traffic and partially blocking a portion of Interstate 35W near Mounds View. 

Emergency crews dealt with another crash on I-694 eastbound. Officials have not released any information about injuries related to this incident. 

Minnesota State Troopers also responded to at least one crash on Thursday morning with fatal injuries. Troopers said the 39-year-old driver of a Jeep Cherokee was killed after sliding off of Highway 62 near Minneapolis around 2 a.m.

Authorities said from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., 191 crashes, 328 spinouts, 20 jackknifed semis were reported across the state. Ten people were injured, but none of them seriously, according to officials.

Some people in the Twin Cities and over into western Wisconsin woke up with no power on Thursday morning. According to Xcel Energy., more than 36,000 customers in Minnesota and Wisconsin were experiencing outages at one point. As of 9 p.m. Thursday, more than 15,000 customers were still without power.

The National Weather Service reported 3.7 inches of snow at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport at 6 p.m. Thursday, while Chanhassen had 5.3 inches.

Schools were playing it safe on Thursday, with more than 200 across the state either delaying the start of classes or canceling them all together.
