MINNEAPOLIS — With a winter storm moving into the Twin Cities this week, businesses like Tom Thomson's hardware store are now hoping a potential snowstorm brings big business.
"I've been here for 18 years, and the shop has been here since 1912," he said. "We sell a lot more ice melt and shovels, especially the ice melt when it gets slippier and starts melting. It's easier to clear your sidewalk with that."
Guse Hardware located near Bryant and 41st in Minneapolis has been a staple for decades. Snow supplies line the entrance to the store, leading to a shelf filled with winter supplies inside.
It's something Thomson looks forward to each year.
"Snow storms are great for us," he said.
Whether the Twin Cities receives freezing rain or the potential for snow starting Monday night, a spokesperson with MnDOT told KARE 11, it would be prepared.
"Crews are monitoring conditions and preparing for the upcoming storm," adding, "We encourage drivers to be weather aware and to plan ahead for changing road conditions in the coming days as this storm moves through Minnesota. "
But as crews prepare behind the scenes, Thomson urges Minnesotans to think ahead before any snow or freezing rain starts to fall.
"Come beforehand then you don't have to try to get a shovel, you'll already have a shovel to shovel yourself out," he said.
Minnesota's updated 511 website or the 511mn mobile app are also available to see current impacts along your route all season long.
