MINNEAPOLIS — Vehicles are crashing and spinning out across the Twin Cities metro Friday morning as a multi-inch snow event makes things slick on highways and side streets.
The Minnesota State Patrol posted on X (Twitter) that between 5 p.m. Thursday night (when light snow began falling) and 2 p.m. Friday troopers reported 261 crashes, 29 of them with injuries. Another 141 vehicles spun out or slid off the road, and three jackknifed semis were reported.
Snow that fell Thursday night into Friday morning is the first of two events that are expected to pack a pretty potent one-two punch. MnDOT plows were out for much of the night, but a crew out in Mobile 11 for Sunrise said roads they encountered were slick. They passed by a number of vehicles and semis involved in crashes.
South of the metro, near Albert Lea, officials closed westbound Interstate 90 due to a serious crash late Thursday. The state patrol says a 51-year-old Iowa man was killed when the pickup he was driving collided with a semi. The driver of the truck, a 60-year-old woman from Oklahoma, was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says traffic was diverted between Highway 13 and South Broadway Ave. until the investigation was completed and the scene cleared.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for most of central and southeastern Minnesota until 10 a.m. Friday as snow continues to fall through the night. Accumulations between 2-5 inches are predicted with a few isolated spots getting up to 6 inches.
