Snow pummels southern half of state, State Patrol reporting 321 crashes

Southern and eastern communities saw the heaviest totals within the Twin Cities metro, often netting over a foot of snow.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota's latest bout with mother nature netted over a foot of snow for many across parts of the Twin Cities.

The snow wrapped up with the highest accumulations in the southern and eastern metro, where between 15"-21" was reported. Most of the rest of the metro received around 4"-8" of snow.

Eastern metropolitan communities such as St. Paul and Woodbury saw around 21" and 20" of snow respectively.

Southern metropolitan communities like Eagan, Jordan, and Apple Valley saw 18", 17.7" and 16.5" respectively.

The Minnesota State Patrol said 321 crashes were reported statewide between 6 a.m. Friday to 12 p.m. Saturday, as snow piled up across the southern portion of the state.

That total includes 26 crashes with injuries and one fatality. There were also 311 reports of vehicles going off roadways, and 21 jackknifed semi trucks.

One big crash involved two semi trucks that temporarily closed a portion of southbound Interstate 35 north of Faribault on Friday. The crash happened around 11 a.m. as the snowstorm began to creep north towards the metro.

The State Patrol says the crash also involved five other vehicles. Troopers say no injuries from that crash have been reported.

Proceed with caution when heading out the door Saturday.
