The Twin Cities metro is getting less snow than others: Here's why

While parts of southwest Minnesota could get close to a foot, and a swath from Rochester to Madison might get buried, the metro will get an inch or two.

While parts of Minnesota and southern Wisconsin may get up to a foot of snow from this system, the metro is getting left out.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — You know them... friends and neighbors who wait for snow like presents on Christmas. They're the ones who have been walking around grumbling about uncovered grass and unfrozen lakes and telling stories about epic winters from the past.

Well, there may be some smiles today in parts of Minnesota, as a winter system is dropping significant snow in specific areas of the state. KARE 11's Weather Team said Marshall and other locales in the southwest could get between five and 10 inches Monday into Tuesday morning, while far southeastern Minnesota and a swath of southern Wisconsin could get a foot.

KARE 11 meteorologist John Zeigler said light snow that started falling in the Twin Cities metro about 8 a.m. would only last a couple of hours before resuming tonight. He predicted just one to three inches but said it would be enough to make roads slick and make driving tricky for the afternoon commute.

So why is the seven-county metro being left out of the snow party? Zeigler blames a pocket of dry air that is keeping the system at bay to the south, and his colleague KARE 11 Meteorologist Ben Dery adds to the explanation.

"The problem in the near term is that while strong storm systems are developing, the tracks of these systems are missing us to the south. That's the case with today's storm, and it will be the case with another storm that we will get a glancing blow from later this week. Areas in Iowa, southern Wisconsin and Illinois will be getting hit with a couple of major snowstorms while we are more spectators than anything else," Dery said.

"We will get some serious cold scheduled to arrive later this weekend, likely our first subzero readings of the season," he added.

If there is a silver lining to getting less snow, it's that lakes in the metro won't have a heavy blanket of snow that will meddle with ice-making when temps drop into single, then below zero digits on Friday into the weekend. That should be a good recipe for good, strong ice that will soon allow ice anglers and others to do their thing.
