GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — The State Fair is over, the kids are back to school, and the trees are beginning to make it very clear: Summer in Minnesota is breathing its last.
Yep, we're talking fall colors. And while some of the leaves we see changing here in the metro are a little early, the color developing up north is typical and expected for this time of year.
The early changing of leaves on the trees here in the metro can be explained by stress. Sometimes that stress is because of too little moisture, and sometimes... by even too much water. It's the latter that's more likely this year. Stress can also come from trees being planted too deep, which causes the roots to twist, or girdle. Maples are especially prone to this.

Typical color develops across northern Minnesota from mid to late September. Here in the metro we generally expect peak color season to fall in late September to early October. And areas farther south typically reach peak season mid to late October.
