WeatherMinds: Fishing Opener climatology

The weather varies widely for Minnesota's fishing opener. Ben Dery breaks down the spread of temperatures and historical chances for rain.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Minnesota's fishing opener is Saturday, May 15th. This year is the latest an opener can be in Minnesota.

It's always scheduled two weekends before Memorial Day and this year, Memorial Day is the last day of the month, May 31st. Mother's day is the second Sunday in May, so this was a rare year where the two didn't coincide.

The last time the fishing opener was this late was back in 2010.

In the metro the coldest opener was 31 degrees in 1979.

The warmest was 91 degrees in 1987.

This time of year can bring just about anything! Some years we are still waiting for ice out on northern MN lakes, while others we are swimming already.

The wettest opener was in 1965 with 1.64" of rain falling. Rain is pretty common for fishing opener, with anglers getting rained on six out of the last ten years.

Good luck this weekend!
