Wintery blend of rain, snow causes closures across the Twin Cities

A mix of warm temperatures and light rain are to blame for the cancellation of various winter activities.

MINNESOTA, USA — Editor's note: The video above first aired on KARE 11 on Feb. 14, 2023.

The ebbs and flows of another Minnesota winter have led to closings, both temporarily and seasonally, of typical winter activities across the state.

Ice Fishing

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is warning of poor ice conditions, which are expected to get worse. The department's Water Patrol unit has responded to multiple calls for snowmobiles and ATVs that have fallen through the ice on Lake Minnetonka.

Vehicles aren't the only object of concern according to the office.

“Lake ice around the county is in incredibly poor conditions and will present challenges to those who leave ice houses in place,” said HCSO Major Shane Magnuson, in a release.

Ice Rinks

Warming houses and outdoor ice rinks in parks in Edina, including Centennial Lakes Park, remained closed Wednesday because of poor ice conditions, according to the city.

Citing warmer temperatures, the City of Plymouth announced outdoor ice rinks and warming houses are closed for the season.

Additionally, the Afton Alps ski resort in Hastings suspended operations on Wednesday.

"The recent heavy rain and the dropping temps have impacted the snow. The grooming team will be using the forecasted cold temps to repair the snow surface," according to a statement on the organization's Instagram.

The resort plans to reopen Thursday morning.
