New Year, New Zone – Part 2: Trees & Shrubs

The USDA map showing gardening zones has morphed due to changes in the climate, and there is a new list of flowers, trees and shrubs that may work for you.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Last week we suggested some Zone 5 perennials you may want to try, inspired by the USDA garden zone map that now classifies much of the metro and southern Minnesota as Zone 5.

Now it's time to consider some trees and shrubs that would be appropriate for the revised zone, some of them suggested by you on our Facebook page!

-Japanese Maples immediately come to mind… Sue suggested them on Facebook.

-Who doesn’t love hydrangeas? In fact I just planted some climbing hydrangeas at my farm. Oak leaf hydrangeas are another good one to try… suggested by Grow with KARE member Kimberly.

-Flowering dogwoods might not be on your radar but they are worth a try. Teresa on our page agrees.

-If you know me, you know I’m a big fan of edible landscaping. And Zone 5 offers some great choices, like quince and hardy kiwi! How about persimmons, a suggestion from Marybeth. And I’ve yet to meet someone who wouldn’t love a Bing cherry tree to harvest from.

-Kwanzan flowering cherry trees don’t bear fruit, but they're known for amazing flowers at the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

-Japanese Stewartia and Dawn Redwood are colorful tree choices you might look at planting.

-For a good evergreen shrub, try the Densiformis' Dense Spreading Yew.

That's quite a list to cull from. Embrace a sense of adventure and give something new a try this year... new year, new zone, new plants!
