Alleged U of MN peeper charged with breaking into dorm

A female student at Comstock Hall reported the man peering over her shower stall in May.

MINNEAPOLIS — A 35-year-old DoorDash driver is charged with second-degree burglary after a female student at the University of Minnesota reported him peering over the stall at while she showered in the bathroom across the hall from her dorm room in Comstock Hall.

University of Minnesota police responded to the 911 call at 10:08 p.m. on May 23 and pieced together an investigation based on the victim's description and surveillance video. That led them to Teamrat Abraham, whom police arrested the next day as he tried driving from his home in Little Canada.

According to the criminal complaint, the 19-year-old victim was taking a shower when she noticed the top of a head appear over the partition between the shower and one of the toilet stalls. She told police he was wearing a hat that was black, green, and yellow.

Police tracked the movements of the man using surveillance video and discovered an open window in an unsecured dorm room with the window screen removed. The man on video then went down the stairs to the basement level and rode the elevator to the fourth floor where the woman was showering.

The surveillance video also captured the man leaving Comstock Hall and getting into his Hyundai Sonata with the license plate number visible, according to court documents.

Police noticed that the man had a cell phone in his hand on the surveillance video, so after Abraham was arrested, they seized the phone with a search warrant. Court documents don't say whether he was recording the victim in the shower.

Abraham posted $40,000 bond and was released from the Hennepin County Jail on May 30. His next court hearing is scheduled for July 17.
