LAKEVILLE, Minn. — State public safety officials are identifying the deputy who fatally shot a man while serving Order for Protection on Friday, Feb. 28 in Lakeville.
The deputy has been identified as Sergeant Scott Durdall. Durdall has been with the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office for 22 years.
Durdall has been placed on routine administrative leave, which is common in officer-involved shootings. .
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the man who died from multiple gunshot wounds as Kent Richard Kruger, 36, of Lakeville.
The "manner of death is homicide and the BCA is investigating," according to a news release.
Authorities say deputies and officers from the Dakota County Sheriff's Office and Lakeville police were serving the Order for Protection at around 11 a.m., which included an order for Kruger to vacate the residence. Kruger also had an active arrest warrant for fourth-degree assault of a peace officer.
According to the Sheriff's Office, within seconds of authorities entering the residence Kruger opened fire on the deputies. One Dakota County deputy, now identified as Durdall, returned fire, killing him. No officers or deputies were harmed in the incident.
Lakeville officers wear body cameras but Dakota County deputies do not. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is determining whether Lakeville cameras captured the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
