ST PAUL, Minn. — St. Paul police are investigating the 26th homicide of 2019 after a Sunday night shooting in the city, one that came just hours after another homicide in what is a particularly deadly stretch for the capitol city.
Officers were called to the Summit-University neighborhood in St. Paul just before 11:30 pm for a report of shots fired.
Police arrived on the scene near St. Anthony Ave. and Dale Street North to find an unconscious man in the driver's seat of a car with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Regions Hospital where he later died of his injuries.
Friends of the victim gathered Monday at the scene, bringing balloons and other items to remember their friend.
"He was a really good person. So that's how I'm going to remember him. He just recently had a child and we're going to be living through his memories and through his baby," said Antquanet Davis, who grew up with the victim.
A second man later walked into Regions Hospital with injuries from broken glass.
Investigators later learned that the actual shooting scene was at Central Avenue West and Kent Street North. The intersection and surrounding area was blocked off as evidence was collected and potential witnesses were interviewed.
This is the 26th homicide of 2019, making it the city's deadliest year in more than decade. There were 24 homicides in 2017, according to police.
