MINNEAPOLIS — Prosecutors said a woman shot and killed a 40-year-old man during a big fight this past weekend at a popular late-night market and deli in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood of Minneapolis.
Misti Dawn Nelson, 27, of Minneapolis, was charged with second-degree murder, according to court documents.
Prosecutors said on Saturday, Dec. 30, around 3:45 a.m., officers were called to a shooting at the convenience store, Mr. Santana, on the 600 block of University Ave. S.E.
"Officers were advised there was a fight involving 10 people inside the store, shots fired, and someone laying in the street," the criminal complaint stated.
When officers arrived, they found 40-year-old Kenneth Maurice Johnson with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and "left back shoulder area."
Johnson was taken to Hennepin Healthcare where he died of his injuries, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner. He was from Wayne, Michigan.
Prosecutors said video surveillance from inside the store shows Nelson pulling out a pistol and hitting a woman in the head with the gun.
A short time later, Nelson opened the front door from outside of the store and fired "a shot into the fighting group of people."
Officials said about eight hours after the shooting, Nelson turned herself in and admitted to shooting the victim two times.
Nelson also turned in her Glock 43 9mm handgun, which she has a valid permit for.
Nelson told police that "she aimed at his torso like she was trained in the permit to carry class to do," according to the complaint. She told police she shot the man because she was hit in the face in the fight and that the man was bigger than her.
Nelson also stated that her sister, a cashier at Mr. Santana, was involved in the fight and she did not want to see her get hurt.
Authorities said Nelson never called 911 or attempted to help the shooting victim.
