RICE COUNTY, Minnesota — Over Memorial Day weekend, deputies from the Rice County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a canoe tipped over on the Cannon River near the 18000 block of Cabot Avenue.
The 911 call came in Saturday morning that a group of three adults and six kids were trapped in the water. When deputies arrived, the group was hanging onto downed trees as water rushed down stream. Everyone made it out okay. deputies say they all were wearing life jackets.
Back in 2018, a tornado ripped through the area and took down many trees that are still stuck in the Cannon River. Rice County Sheriff Deputy Ross Spicer recommends people stay clear of rivers that have higher than normal levels because it can disguise dangerous debris.
The DNR has the river level listed as 'high'. Deputies recommend viewing river levels before any kayak trips.
