ST PAUL, Minn. — On the 10th anniversary of MNsure's first rollout of health insurance options, the state welcomed a record number of enrollees onto its network for 2024.
The health marketplace released a statement Wednesday, revealing over 132,000 Minnesotans have opted for coverage through the network so far.
“As we wrap up the year, it is exciting to see how far Minnesota has come and recognize the incredible progress our state has made in the last ten years: our uninsured rate has been cut in half and more Minnesotans than ever before have access to health care and financial protection from unexpected injury or illness,” said MNsure CEO Libby Caulum.
The early enrollment period began on Nov. 1 and ended on Dec. 15. Anyone who still desires a plan through MNsure for next year can still apply before Jan. 15, 2024. Those who sign up between Dec. 15 and Jan. 15 will begin their plans on Feb. 1.
MNsure said private health plans jumped 11% this year compared to 2022.
The health insurance marketplace was established in tandem with 2013's landmark Affordable Care Act, and aims to serve those without access to affordable health care through their workplaces — e.g. gig workers, self-employed, etc. — and early retirees who don't yet qualify for Medicare.
In a statement from the White House, President Joe Biden claimed 2024 enrollment in the Affordable Care Act also broke records nationwide. The statement said over 19 million people had signed up as of Wednesday, Dec. 20
