HASTINGS, Minn. — A Cambridge man charged in the November 2023 shooting death of 26-year-old Avontae King was sentenced Friday to serve over 12 years in prison.

Andrew Fisher, 20, will receive 265 days credit already served toward his 153-month sentence. The Dakota County judge imposed the sentence after Fisher pleaded guilty in May 2024 to one count of second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony.

According to prosecutors, Fisher and another man accused in the case, Tre Iglesias, went to King's South St. Paul home on Nov. 24, 2023, and took a bag of marijuana before running from the residence.

The original criminal complaint said both King and Iglesias followed Fisher outside, where Fisher ultimately turned a gun on King and fired.

King was taken to the hospital by emergency responders but did not survive. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner later determined King died as the result of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

"I hope today’s sentencing shows that senseless gun violence will not go unpunished,” said Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena, in a statement. “My sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Avontae, especially his young children.”

The county attorney's office said Fisher is currently in custody and waiting to be transferred to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.

Iglesias, according to court documents, is scheduled to appear in court for his next hearing Sept. 9 in Hastings.
