MINNEAPOLIS — The temporary disaster shelter for residents displaced by the Drake Hotel fire closed on Wednesday.
The shelter was run by the Minnesota Red Cross at First Covenant Church in Minneapolis.
There were at least 80 people housed at the church since the Christmas day fire.
"No one left the shelter today without a plan for their immediate housing needs and connections to resources that can help them to move forward," said Phil Hansen, Regional Executive on the Minnesota Red Cross.
Several officials spoke at a news conference held Wednesday afternoon.
"The shelter at First Covenant Church is closed but we and our partners are still here and we will continue our work to make homelessness rare, brief and non-recurring," said Jodi Wentland, the Assistant Hennepin County Administrator for Human Services.
Many of the people staying there have been successful at finding permanent housing with help from the city, county and the Red Cross.
Twenty-six people still need assistance and have been placed in transitional housing until they can find a place to call home.
To date, about $250,000 dollars from the Minneapolis Foundation has been donated to assist those in need. Of that total, $165,000 has been distributed in cash to those displaced.
