Duluth man went ice skating, found deceased after falling through ice

The 78-year-old was reported missing after not coming home as scheduled.

SUPERIOR, Wis. — A Duluth man who reportedly was going ice skating Sunday was found dead with officials saying he fell through the ice.

Gregory Garmer, 78, was reported missing Sunday after not coming home when he said he was going to. Garmer had said he was going skating at Woodstock Bay, just off the St. Louis River in Superior.

In an update Monday night, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office announced Garmer fell through the ice and was deceased. Officials thanked The St. Louis County Rescue Squad, saying "their technology and expertise greatly contributed to a timely resolution for this tragedy."

This comes after two separate water rescue incidents in Woodbury. An adult man was rescued from Wilmes Lake after having fallen through thin ice around 11:15 a.m. At around 4:30 p.m., a teen fell into Markgrafs Lake, and another person fell into the water while trying to rescue the teen. Police told KARE 11 they do not know the condition of the two people who fell in Markgrafs Lake.
